All fertilizers are marked with 3 letters: N-P-K. The official Earthbox planting guide recommends that the first number (N) should be lower than the last two (P-K) and the numbers should be between 5 and 15.
One option is to start with a fertilizer with high K to stimulate root growth, and to switch to one with higher P once the plants start to form flowers. Higher P fertilizer will stimulate fruit growth.
A high N fertilizer will make plants to grow large and dark green but will very few flowers/fruits.
“Up, Down and All-Around” is another way to think about NPK and the numbering system for fertilizers. Your lawn needs nitrogen for the leaves’ color and growth, phosphorous for strong roots, and potassium for overall health. Source: Home Depot.
There are several options for fertilizer use:
1. Add fertilizer in the potting mix before planting. Place a fertilizer strip at the top of the mix when the plants is planted (recommended in most cases).
2. Add fertilizer every 1-2 weeks.
3. Add half to 1/4 strength fertilizer to the water every time you water your plants.
